Big Brothers Big Sisters

This semester I received the chance to intern at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Manchester. I would be the Social Media intern and took care of their Facebook page primarily. I also created a Twitter account for them, wrote Press Releases for various events and helped market their biggest fundraiser; 30th Annual Bowl for Kids' Sake.

It was an eye-opening experience working here. Being exposed to children from various backgrounds, and seeing what children don't have in this world is something that is life changing.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has a true impact on both kids lives and their role model. A one-to-one relationship is built between the child and role model. This relationship is built on friendship and trust and can flourish into a lasting lifetime of belonging.

Knowing that I was doing something to help the Greater Manchester community is fulfilling. I would sit in the office working on a variety of social media projects and also went on the bus with a group of 4th and 5th grades to Comcast. Comcast is where their Bigs were located and they would spend an hour with them every two weeks; reading, doing homework, arts and crafts, etc.

Facebook is a big part of Social Media. When working on Facebook I looked to see what could be posted that was not a long paragraph about an event or something else. I decided to use pictures which would capture people's attention. A picture of a young kid and their Big goes a long way, it shows the relationship between the two.

Posting a question, quote or saying gets the audience involved. A quote about volunteering touches people's hearts while a question about the weather gets them actively involved with the Facebook page.

I love going on Facebook and having the opportunity to run the Facebook of Big Brothers Big Sisters was a great experience.
